There are 1, 2, 3-ply and Dunilin Napkins. The least luxurious is the 1-ply industrial which only comes in white. The 2-ply bulk is most often used but comes in limited colors. The 3-ply is also very luxurious and comes in a wonderful array of colors. The most luxurious (also available in limited colors) is the Dunilin, which acts and feels like linen. Our Recommendations
1. Hors d'oeuvres - for a two hour cocktail party you will need 3 beverage napkins per person. A napkin served with each drink is also a nice touch.
2. Dinner - For a sit-down dinner, 1 napkin per person is sufficient...unless, you are serving something messy like ribs, fried chicken or other finger foods. For a buffet dinner, plan on at least 2 if not 3 dinner napkins per person . To conserve, you could use a luncheon size napkin as a substitute for a dinner size. Remember, people often go back for seconds or thirds and rarely save their used napkins!
Just to be on the safe side, plan to have 20% more than you think you will need of any size napkin...except for dessert. Depending on your dessert, where you will only need one, you can use a beverage napkin, or, for a more luxurious touch you can use a luncheon napkin.
